TIRTO.ID – The latest survey from PPIM UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta through the Indonesian Convey project said that most teachers in Indonesia agree that Islam is the only solution to solve society’s problems.

In a survey entitled “Fading Lamps: A Portrait of Teacher Diversity in Indonesia” which was introduced last Tuesday (16/10/2018), as many as 82.77 percent of respondents from the survey stated this.

Furthermore, as many as 40.36 percent agree that all knowledge is already in the Qur’an so that Muslims do not need to study knowledge that comes from the west.

The number of teacher samples in this survey was 2,237 people using a circular systematic random sampling technique based on the gender of the teacher. Conducted between 6 August to 6 September 2018, this research was conducted in 34 provinces in Indonesia where in each province a randomly selected district/city based on the probability proportional to size (PPS) technique for the number of teachers in each province in Indonesia.

In general, according to this survey, teachers in Indonesia do have quite high intolerance and radical opinions with a percentage of 50.87 percent and 40.14 percent of the total respondents, respectively.

This survey also found that kindergarten and Raudhatul Athfal teachers in Indonesia had the highest opinion of intolerance compared to teachers in other educational institutions.

An example of an intolerant opinion is that as many as 56 percent of teachers do not agree that non-Muslims are allowed to establish religious-based schools around them.

Meanwhile, an example of radical opinion is that as many as 33 percent of teachers agree to encourage others to join the fight to create an Islamic state.

This survey found a link between teacher income and the phenomenon of intolerance. The lower the teacher’s income, the higher the teacher’s opinion and radical action intentions.

However, the higher the age of the teacher, the lower their opinion and radical action intentions.

Therefore, this survey encourages the government to pay more attention to teacher welfare. One way to do this is by making teacher minimum payment standards better regardless of school status.
