NETRALNEWS.COM – Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) Saiful Umam said that Islamic school teachers have an opinion that tends to be more intolerant of followers of other religions. Saiful said this was the case compared to school teachers.
This was conveyed by Saiful in the Launching of the Results of the National Survey of PPIM – Dim Pelita: Portrait of the Religious Teachers of Indonesia, Tuesday (16/10/2018).
“However, this can be understood because of the homogeneous nature of Islamic school education. However, various programs that provide opportunities for Islamic school teachers to increase the plurality of experiences need to be done, ”explained Saiful.
For that, we need various programs that provide opportunities for Islamic school teachers to gain experience in a pluralistic and diverse environment. In addition, increasing religious literacy in Islamic school teachers so that they are more familiar with different religions and groups.
One effective way to strengthen the nationalism and plurality of teachers both serving in public and private schools / Islamic schools is the empowerment of teacher-producing institutions, Educational Personnel Education Institutions (LPTK). This must be a top priority as part of efforts to prevent the spread of intolerance and exclusion.
“The same thing should be done for the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) and the Continuous Professional Development Program (PPKB). This will be the vanguard that creates a “lamp” that can light the path of students in filling the life of the nation and state, “explained Saiful.
To note, the PPIM 2018 survey population target is 2,237 Muslim teachers in schools/Islamic school at the Kindergarten / RA, SD / MI, SMP / MTs, SMA / K / MA levels who teach all subjects in Indonesia. Teachers are teachers of Language, Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA), Social Sciences, Islamic Religious Education and Character, Arts and Skills, Guidance and Counseling, Class Teachers, Principals (not teaching), and others.
The survey was conducted between 6 August to 6 September 2018. The research sample was taken from 34 provinces in Indonesia. Wherein each province a district/city was randomly selected based on the probability proportional to size (PPS) technique for the number of teachers in each province. in Indonesia. The number of schools is both under the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) and the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag).
From the district/city selection process, 767 districts/cities were obtained. The largest number of districts/cities selected to be the sample were provinces with the highest number of teachers, namely East Java, West Java, Central Java, North Sumatra, and South Sulawesi. Meanwhile, the lowest number of teachers is in the province of North Kalimantan.
From the number of selected districts/cities, schools / Islamic schools were determined randomly which also used the PPS technique. After the schools/madrasahs were determined using a random process, the survey officers obtained a sample frame of Muslim teachers in the selected schools.
To determine a sample of teachers in selected schools / Islamic school, PPIM uses a circular systematic random sampling technique based on the gender of the teacher. This is done so that the proportion of the number of samples of male teachers is the same as the number of male teachers in the school. Likewise with female teachers.
