Research on Muslim Youth: Attitudes & Behavior on Violence and Extremism

Qualitative research on the attitude and behavior of muslim youth organziations at intra and extra school and university on radicalism and radical Islamic movement

What Indonesia would be like in tomorrow? Would it remain a nationalist-republic state, or would it switch to an Islamic state with caliphate system? Matter what, among all dependable factors correlated to the case, youth is one of the crucial cause in this matter, the future leaders who would soon rule the country.

Thus, the research which conducted by CONVEY and researchers of CSRC UIN Jakarta would like to seek thoroughly into the fundamental structure of attitudes and behaviors of young Muslim generations or the millennials in regard to violent extremism in Indonesia. The study involved approximately 935 young Muslim activists scattered in 18 cities/ districts.

The study has found that young Muslim generations are somewhat moderate in general. Yet at the same time, there is a trend of conservatism risen among millennials with such scriptural and communal characteristic. Find out further findings and analysis in the book “Kaum Muda Muslim Milenial: Konservatisme, Hibridasi Identitas dan Tantangan Radikalisme” (The Muslim Millennials: Conservatism, Hybrid Identity, and Challenge of Radicalism). The research also produced policy brief, a policy recommendation proposal for the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of Republic of Indonesia in concern to counter/ prevent radicalism and violent extremism among young Muslims in Indonesia.
