NU.OR.ID – Director of the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Jakarta, Saiful Umam, said that income is one of the factors that influence intolerance and radicalism among teachers in Indonesia.

“The lower the income the higher the opinion (F = 3,390, p = 0.009) and the teacher’s radical action intention (F = 10,481, p = 0,000),” said Umam during the PPIM Survey Launching event in Jakarta, Tuesday (16/10).

This data was obtained from the results of a survey conducted by PPIM from 6 August to 6 September 2018. The total sample of teachers surveyed reached 2,237 people from 34 provinces in Indonesia. The sample of female teachers was 1,335 people (59.79 percent), while male teachers were 898 people (40.21 percent).

The sample of teachers was also classified into several categories, including economic status: teachers whose income was below 1 million rupiahs were 603 people (26.97 percent), between 1 million and 2.5 million 565 people (25.27 percent), and teachers with honoraria of 2.5 million to 5 million 740 people (33.09 percent). Meanwhile, teachers whose pay is 5 million to 7.5 million 231 people (10.33 percent) and above 7.5 million are 97 people (4.34 percent).

The mean of teachers with salaries below 1 million was 46.1, between 1 million and 2.5 million (mean = 51.7), and teachers with salaries of 2.5 million to 5 million (mean = 52.7). Meanwhile, the mean of teachers whose salary was 5 million to 7.5 million and above 7.5 million was 53.9 and 49.8, respectively.

“The less the mean, the higher the intolerance,” explained Umam.

This survey uses two measuring instruments to measure the level of intolerance and radicalism. First, the Implicit Association Test (IAT). This measuring tool is used to see the potential for teacher intolerance and radicalism implicitly. Second, a questionnaire. This is to explicitly assess intolerance and radicalism and the factors that influence them.
