PPIM.UINJKT.AC.ID – Psychologist from the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, Yunita Faela Nisa, elaborated that parenting had become the issues that varied among parents. The methods that parents applied to their children could familiarize them to diversity taken from existing reality. Fanaticism and extremism, she said, was inseparable from psychological factors.
“[Parents] need to pay attention to [their] parenting styles in shaping children’s characters,” Yunita said on Friday (14/8) in a virtual seminar series of #ModerasiBeragama (Religious Moderation) themed “Women Talking about Religious Moderation”. The seminar was organized by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) of the UIN Jakarta through the CONVEY Indonesia program.
“People who are fanatical or extreme usually spend a lot of energy and, cognitively, they will be overthinking about something. This is not good for mental health. And as the result, they can easily get angry with something that they think is not ideal,” said the Deputy Dean of the Psychology Department of UIN Jakarta.
Yunita also emphasized the urgency of a psychological approach in responding to the recent increase of religious extremism. “The mental health [process] that happens in individuals can be an alternative way to explain the process of a person being extreme,” she said.
The virtual seminar on Religious Moderation is held every Friday via “Convey Indonesia” official Youtube channel. Besides Yunita, the discussion that was moderated by Convey Indonesia Team Leader Jamhari Makruf also presented notable female figures as speakers, including Alissa Wahid (National Coordinator of Gusdurian Network), Siti Ruhaini Dzuhayatin (Main Expert Staff of the Indonesian Presidential Office), and Oki Setiana Dewi (actress and a doctoral candidate of UIN Jakarta’s Graduate School).
