PPIM.UINJKT.AC.ID – “Philanthropy are leading institutions we can utilize to promote religious moderation,” Jamhari Makruf, Professor of Anthropology from the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, said on Friday (28/8).
He was speaking in a virtual seminar series of #ModerasiBeragama (Religious Moderation) themed “Generosity and Philanthropy in the Framework of Religious Moderation”, which was organized by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) of the UIN Jakarta through Convey Indonesia program.
Jamhari emphasized that philanthropy and religious moderation had the same spirit, as both led to universal values based on humanity.
“Conceptually, philanthropy asserts the aspects of openness, tolerance and friendliness. It upholds the concept of giving based on humanitarian values,” said the Convey Indonesia Team Leader.
Religious moderation could be a solution in responding to all forms of primordial-based violent extremism that misused the religious and ethnical sentiments.
“Religious moderation is able to reduce the potential of religious and ethnical-based communal conflicts, which are usually triggered by poverty. Since philanthropy organizations tend to be close with those who live in poverty, they can contribute to reducing such conflicts,” Jamhari said.
The virtual seminar on Religious Moderation is held every Friday via “Convey Indonesia” official Youtube channel. The discussion presented several figures who were actively involved in philanthropic activities, such as Haidar Bagir (Founder and Director of Mizan Group), Amelia Fauzia (Director of Social Trust Fund (STF) UIN Jakarta), Hilman Latief (Coordinator of LazisMu – PP Muhammadiyah), and Abdur Rouf (Executive Director of NU Care, LazisNU).
