JAKARTA — The Center for Islamic and Community Studies (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a Salafi Database Research Seminar. This research originated from the desire of the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM-UIN Jakarta) to create a database about ustadz and Salafi institutions in Indonesia.

“This research has succeeded in identifying Salafi educational institutions in 25 cities or districts. There is still much that has not been studied. This shows that the development of Salafi Islamic boarding schools can be considered quite fast, ”said UIN Din Wahid PPIM researcher at Hotel Ambhara, Jalan Iskandarsyah Raya No. 1, South Jakarta, Monday (29/1).

Din said Salafi Islamic boarding schools were not monolithic, some were oriented towards Yemen and rejected the state curriculum. Meanwhile, others are oriented towards Saudi Arabia and Kuwait which tend to be accommodating to the demands of the parents of students by adopting the national curriculum.

“The teachings of Salafism, especially Tawhid and al-Wala ‘wa al-Barra make Salafi followers very puritanical and militant, which in turn can cause conflict and tension in society,” he concluded.

Din also revealed that financial support from the Middle East and within the country, both institutionally and individually, was instrumental in the development of Salafi Islamic boarding schools.

“This is in line with declining financial support from abroad, now Salafi Islamic boarding schools are trying to be financially independent,” explained Din. []
