PPIM.UINJKT.AC.ID – “The principles and articles contained in Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution are in line with Islamic values and the purposes of Islam baldatun toyyibatun wa rabbun ghafur,” actress Oki Setiana Dewi, who was also a doctoral candidate of the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta’s Graduate School, said on Friday (14/8).
She was speaking in a virtual seminar series of #ModerasiBeragama (Religious Moderation) themed “Women Talking about Religious Moderation”, which was organized by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) of the UIN Jakarta through Convey Indonesia program.
Oki highlighted the importance of interpreting and implementing religious moderation in appropriate ways, accomplishing world peace without ideological, religious, or racial-based violence. She said that Indonesia, as a diverse nation, must uphold tolerance as the key to develop as a peaceful country.
“The term wasathiyah [justly balanced or middle-path Islam] or moderatism cannot be adopted from the perspective of the extremists, who tend to enforce violence and racism. But it should not also be taken from the liberalists, who interpret Islam as very loose and free, that it crosses the line,” said the cast of Ketika Cinta Bertasbih religious movie.
Oki said that the characters of Indonesian people were also in line with wasathiyah, the concept that had been stipulated in the Quran, Al Hujurat verse 13. The verse states how Allah SWT has glorified all human beings regardless of their ethnicity, nations, languages, religions and races.
The virtual seminar on Religious Moderation is held every Friday via “Convey Indonesia” official Youtube channel. Besides Oki, the discussion that was moderated by Convey Indonesia Team Leader Jamhari Makruf also presented notable female figures as speakers, including Alissa Wahid (National Coordinator of Gusdurian Network), Siti Ruhaini Dzuhayatin (Main Expert Staff of the Indonesian Presidential Office), and Yunita Faela Nisa (a PPIM researcher and Deputy Dean of Psychology Department from UIN Jakarta).
