IMPIANNEWS.COM (Bukit Tinggi) – Conservative turn, a term used by Martin van Bruinessen to describe the change from a tolerant “friendly face” to the conflicted “angry face” of Indonesian Muslims. A condition that has seen symptoms since the transition from the New Order Era to the Reformation. And now, the echo around us is increasingly felt. Especially with the development of digital media, Indonesia is known as one of the countries with the largest number of internet users in the world.

This phenomenon is increasingly concerning with the fact that there is a radical movement in millennials and our educational spaces. The strategic position of the millennial generation, with a wide range of associations and is relatively autonomous, is often seen as the most appropriate and easy means of being infiltrated by radical ideas.

One of the reasons most responsible for this condition is the victory of conservative groups in seizing reading rooms for the millennial generation of Muslims.

As the research findings of the research team from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Postgraduate Yogyakarta, that the reading rooms of the millennial generation are filled with popular Islamic references that display Islamic ‘angry faces’. Therefore, it becomes very urgent to balance the reading room with a friendly, loving face of Islam.

Since 2015, the Islamic Love Movement (GIC) has been in the process and trying to fill the empty space by producing serial books on Islam Cinta, to promote moderate Islam to the wider community. Islamic books of love have become a reference for society, especially young people in realizing love and peace.

Besides, GIC has also initiated mutual cooperation reading clubs with several organizations, grassroots reading communities, and youth-promoting peace in several cities in Indonesia. In this reading club activity, Gen IC (Gen. Islam Cinta) books were shared and dissected, and the message of peace was spread through social media with the hashtag

#AyoSebarkanCinta and #MeyakiniMenghargai.

In the same year, a millennial community called the Islamic Love Gen (Gen IC) was also formed.

The formation of this community originated from a suggestion from millennial circles that it could become a place for them to study and participate based on their respective passions in spreading the message of love and peace in Islam.

At the commemoration of the 2018 Youth Pledge, the Love Islamic Movement worked together with the Center for Islamic and Community Studies (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in making a breakthrough through Islamic Literacy of Love. No half-hearted, 20 popular literature books on moderate Islam are ready to be produced, targeting the millennial generation as the main target of their readers.

Later, 500 copies of the book and their digital form on each topic can be distributed properly.

These books are presented creatively and attractively with a popular culture approach (pop culture).

It is hoped that reading rooms for young people and the millennial generation can be more balanced and healthier, with the presence of love and awareness of love itself.

Therefore the “Love Islam Literacy Roadshow” aims to:

Presenting the idea of Islamic Literacy of Love (LIC) which contains Islamic teachings that are cool, peaceful, and tolerant to the community, especially millennials.

Distributed Gen Islam Cinta serial books and formed a reading club.

Building a friendship with the community, especially millennials, so that they can work together to spread the idea of LIC in the community and youth organizations.

Bukittinggi will be the first place out of five cities to be visited for the “Love Islamic Literacy Roadshow”. Like the Love Islam Gen Book Talk, Reading Club Launching, Love Islamic Gen Book Bazaar, Community Synergy, and On-Air on Radio RRI Bukittinggi which was held on November 29-30 2018. (sy)
