Schools and universities are like pillars in the progress of national development towards better civilization. These institutions have not just contributing in educational scope, but also unify a massive strength of young patriots, rising and empowering democracy, and establishing nationalism spirit. Prior to circumstances happened in the recent decades, their roles are somewhat being questioned now. As these institutions have been accused for creating radical and intolerant movements and have threaten national stability. The movements said to be geared upon a certain religion, Islam, and they have been promoting caliphate system in switch for the existing government system that they dissatisfy about.
Many researches and solution attempts have been conducted after a constant series of intolerant and radical incidents happened here and there in a horrific status, either the programs run from governments, and civil society organizations. Yet the appalling incidents still less likely to be perished from this country. While unfortunately, there has not been any study that cover up a comparative deals on religiosity and intolerant behaviors among students, college students, and their students and lecturers, on a national sketch.
Hence, this study conducted by CONVEY and researchers of PPIM UIN Jakarta would like to gather a national-scope data of students from varied educational backgrounds including the regular and Islamic public high school and universities. The data thus will able to show a scheme of comparative findings between each institutions and actors in regard to the exposure of violent extremism and radicalism perspective.
Further findings and analysis of the research can be explored in its book “Gen Z: Kegalauan Identitas Keagamaan“ (the Z Generation: Confusion in Religious Identity), and two book reports “Api dalam Sekam: Keberagamaan Generasi Z“ (the Fire in Chaff: Religiosity of the Z Generation) and “Sikap dan Perilaku Keberagamaan Guru dan Dosen Pendidikan Agama Islam“ (Religiosity of Teachers and Lecturers of Islamic Religious Education).
The research survey also produced some evidence-based strategic policy recommendations, divided in two scopes: in university scope, with recommendations to the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education can be explored in the policy brief “Pendidikan Agama bagi Generasi Milenial di Perguruan Tinggi“ (Religious Education for Millennials in Higher Education/ check out the English version here); and in high school scope, with recommendations to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Culture, can be accessed in in the policy brief “Ancaman Radikalisme di Sekolah” (the Threat of Radicalism at Schools/ check out the English version here).
